You make it sound he did something unforgivable, sure getting jizz on my stuff is not the most plesant thing in the world but I don’t think you should go into a everlasting grudge cause of that. Would you really never forgive one of your friends if he’d done the same thing? I sure would…
And it’s important to note that Nagaoka and Takigawa were his friends. If your friend did something that stupid and sincerely apologized, there’s a good chance you’d forgive him.
Do you mean unrealistic because you’ll never ever see someone has enough courage to confess of his past sins to a group of people?
Because a lot of people who have committed worse things have confessed their sins in public to put to rest the feeling of guilt they harbored for decades.

I don’t want to speculate anything, but I have a feeling it’s going to be someone Kurosawa cares about. And it might not be the person you’re thinking of.
It seems till the end, Kitahara never wanted to change or save herself. Kurosawa was almost dragged into the cesspool of oblivion thanks to Kitahara, but his relationship with Nagaoka and Takigawa saved him.
I think the bigger person was Nagaoka, Takigawa was just the first in a long line of people that will / might forgive him.
